What Every Gel Nail Kit Has to Include

The UV LED Lamp
No lamp means no gel manicure. That is not an exaggeration; gel polish cures through a photochemical reaction that requires UV or LED light to harden and bond to the nail plate, and it does not air-dry regardless of how long you wait.

The Gel Polish

The Base Coat
A base coat goes on before the colour and creates the surface the gel actually bonds to. Two versions exist, and the difference matters for an at-home setup.
A standard base coat is soaked off with acetone when you are ready to remove. A peel-off base coat removes with an orange wood stick run under the edge of the gel, and the whole manicure comes away in one piece without any chemicals at all. The Nail File and Buffer
Nail prep is what determines manicure longevity. Not the quality of the gel nail polish. Not the lamp. Not the number of coats.
Gel polish requires a lightly buffed nail surface to grip to, and if you skip this or do it partially, the gel will lift from the cuticle area within days regardless of everything else, because the bond between product and nail plate depends entirely on what you did to that surface before any gel touched it, and no amount of careful application afterwards compensates for skipping it at the start.

The Alcohol Prep Pads
Used before any product is applied, to remove the surface oils from the nail plate that would otherwise prevent adhesion. Skip this step and the gel will not bond properly to the nail regardless of how carefully everything else is applied.
Small step. Skipping it affects both the finish and how long the manicure lasts.
The Mini Nail Brush
Brush filing debris off the nail after shaping, before any product goes on. Filing without brushing leaves particles on the surface that get trapped under the gel and affect adhesion. This is a prep tool only — not used at any point after gel is applied.

What the Kit Does Not Cover
Two things worth knowing before you start. Cuticle oil is not included in the entry-level kits; it is not required for the manicure itself, but it makes a visible difference to the finished look and keeps the surrounding skin in better condition between sets.
The second thing is a misconception I see repeated often, so I will be direct about it. Gel polish lifespan is determined almost entirely by nail prep, not by the quality of the gel product. A properly prepped nail with a starter kit will outlast a poorly prepped nail with a professional kit, every single time, because prep is what the bond depends on, and no gel formula compensates for an oily or unprepped nail plate regardless of how much it costs.
